Cycling: Lakes-Route

Pure, idyllic alps

The Lakes-Route deserves its name, because many lakes touch the Route from its beginning at the Lake Geneva to its goal at the Lake Zurich. The Route leads through some of the outstanding touristic regions with great sounding names: Montreux, Gruyères, Gstaad, Interlaken, Lucerne, Einsiedeln and Rapperswil…

Whoever completes the Lakes-Route, has seen the most beautiful corners of Switzerland.

Itinerary

Stroll along the promenade and enjoy the breathtaking views of the Lake Genevaand the snow white glaciers of the nearby Mont-Blanc massif.

From Vevey, take the rack railway up to the Mont-Pèlerin. Tranquil roads lead you to the source of the most popular cheese of Switzerland: the Gruyère, which shares its name with the landscape. A recent symphony of green melancholy, cowbells and customs.

approx. 40–50 km
600–855 m
500–735 m

Postcard country Switzerland: cheeseries, chalets, snowy mountains, cable cars, hotel scent and papercutting. Away from the idyll, the Pays d’Enhaut and the Saaneneland are a magnificent landscape, animated by the haze of celebrity and happy mountain goers.

approx. 40 km
735 m
410 m

The artfully decorated wooden houses of the Simmental belong to the most beautiful of Europe. The Simme remains a wild river that demands a lot from dinghy riders. And Spiez, a water sports paradies on the cheerful lake Thun.

approx. 55 km
735 m
410 m

A boat ride from Spiez to Interlaken in the morning. On the shore of Lake Brienz there is a steep rise to get to Meiringen where you take the train across the Brünigpass. You reach Obwalden: a small Canton, a big Valley, a pre-alpine landscape with scattered villages, flat lakes and long traditions.

approx. 55 km
1'145 m
1'200 m

As soon as you get a glimpse of the Lake of Lucerne the Pilatus is in your path. Bay after bay right to Lucerne, a fixed point for every tourist. Even lovelier is the Lake Zug, todays stage goal.

approx. 60 km
485 m
590 m

An orchid, peat and insect world in the Rothenthurmer moor and a busy place of pilgrimage called Einsiedeln. One last steep stretch up to the “Etzel” and then you rush down to the banks of the Lake Zurich.

approx. 68 km
835 m
850 m

Characteristic

Along the totally 16 lakes between Montreux and Horn the route is of course smooth and flat – but between the lakes there are some minor passes to cross: Less athletic cyclists are recommended to use an electric bike which is well suited for this route. Athletic cyclists use the touring bikes.

Beautiful scenery and perfect cycling!
It was so easy to work with Eurotrek. We have always cycled with Backroads or VBT but thought we would try a self guided trip with Eurotrek. They were fantastic to work with and the trip was easy to follow, just watch for the 9 signs. We will definitely use them again next year.
