The essentials at a glance

This moderate cycling tour traverses Switzerland from Vevey to Rorschach, covering approximately 40-75 km daily over 8 nights. The route passes through the Gruyère cheese region, Gstaad, Spiez on Lake Thun, the Brünig Pass area, Lucerne, Einsiedeln pilgrimage site, and Lake Constance. Highlights include a boat ride from Spiez to Interlaken, scenic lake shores, pre-Alpine landscapes, and charming Swiss villages with traditional architecture.

Pure, idyllic alps

The Lake Route lives up to its name: countless lakes and rivers await you on your cycling trip from Lake Geneva to Lake Constance.

The route takes you to places with famous names such as Gruyères, Gstaad, Lucerne, Einsiedeln and Rapperswil, and offers you breathtaking views of the Pre-Alps and Alps. Those who complete the Lake Route will have seen the most beautiful corners of Switzerland.

Itinerary

Luggage drop-off in Vevey. Cycle along quiet roads to the home of Switzerland's most popular cheese, Gruyère. The Gruyère region will enchant you with its mild to pungent symphony of green melancholy, cheerful cowbells and fascinating traditions.

Postcard country Switzerland: cheeseries, chalets with carved wooden facades, a fascinating tradition of paper cutting and snow-covered Alpine peaks. Away from the idyll, the Pays d’Enhaut and the Saaneneland are a magnificent landscape, animated by the haze of celebrity and happy mountain goers.

In Simmental, you will be amazed by the artistically decorated wooden houses and will never get tired of watching the rubber dinghy and canoe enthusiasts dancing on the waves of the popular Simme river. Another water sports paradise awaits you in Spiez on the picturesque Lake Thun.

The boat takes you from Spiez to Interlaken. On the shores of Lake Brienz, the route climbs steeply in places up to Meiringen and then continues by train over the Brünig Pass. You reach the canton of Obwalden, a charming pre-Alpine landscape with scattered settlements, sparkling lakes and long traditions.

As soon as you catch sight of Lake Lucerne, one of the many striking mountains blocks your view. You cycle along the lake shore, bay after bay, towards Lucerne, with Mount Pilatus greeting you in the distance. The stage ends at the lovely Lake Zug.

A cool underwater world in the Höllgrotten caves near Baar, a grim battlefield near Morgarten on the crystal-clear Lake Ägeri, an enchanting high moor paradise with orchids, butterflies and dragonflies near Rothenthurm, and a bustling pilgrimage site in Einsiedeln are fascinating highlights of today's route.

The electricity-supplying Lake Sihl presents itself as charming and useful; Lake Zurich, lined with villas, is divided by the dam; and the Linth plain, improved by engineer Hans Conrad Escher with a newly created canal, fields and meadows.

Figs and kiwis grow on the "Riviera" of Lake Walen at the foot of the sun-drenched rock faces of the Churfirsten mountains. It almost seems as if the vertical flanks are threatening to tip into the deep lake. The route continues gently to Sargans with its proud castle and the mighty Gonzen, once a supplier of iron ore.

The St. Gallen Rhine Valley is a region often blessed with warm foehn winds. Much land was gained during river corrections of the Alpine Rhine. In the distance, the flat delta and the silvery expanse of Lake Constance await. After arriving in Rorschach, luggage pick-up and individual departure.

Tour character

Along the totally 16 lakes between Montreux and Horn, the route is of course smooth and flat – but between the lakes there are some minor passes to cross: Less athletic cyclists are recommended to use an electric bike which is well suited for this route.Athletic cyclists use the touring bikes.
