The essentials at a glance

Cycle along the Aare River from Interlaken to Bad Zurzach through Switzerland's diverse landscapes. This easy 5-day tour covers approximately 227 km, starting with a boat ride from Interlaken to Thun, then passing through UNESCO-listed Bern, the bilingual city of Biel, baroque Solothurn, and Aarau. Experience floodplain forests, nature reserves, the Seeland vegetable-growing region, and Switzerland's water castle where three rivers converge.

Along the largest Swiss River

A classic in the cycling country Switzerland: along the Aare you'll get to know a piece of Switzerland that has preserved the charm of its province, its peasantry and its unspoilt nature right up to the present day: Visit our country and its inhabitants "through the back door" – not through the front entrance with all the tourist stereotypes.

Itinerary

Luggage drop-off in Interlaken. You start your trip with a ride through the wide Aaretal (Aare Valley): large villages, industry, open fields and a powerful river in lush water meadows. Then follows the entrance to Bern, the capital city of Switzerland and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

A few pedal strokes will take you from Bern's UNESCO-listed old town to the idyllic Lake Wohlen. Cycling along the River Aare, you reach the Seeland region, which has been transformed from marshland into one of Switzerland's most productive vegetable-growing areas thanks to the Hagneck Canal. Behind the reed beds and floodplain forest, you can glimpse Lake Biel and soon reach the bilingual watchmaking metropolis of Biel.

This stage delights visitors with the “children” of the Jura water correction project: the Nidau-Büren Canal and the resulting Aare backwater loop in the Häftli nature reserve. The flat Grenchner Witi is also enchanting, with its abundance of birds, hopping rabbits and the Altreu stork colony. Here, the Aare meanders slowly, while in the distance, the St. Ursen Tower of the baroque city of Solothurn greets visitors.

Rivers and traffic, cities and people, factories and industrial warehouses: everything seems to crowd into the strip of land at the foot of the Jura Mountains, merging into a long ribbon of settlements along the River Aare. Nevertheless, the peaceful Swiss Plateau and nature are never far away.

You cycle through a wonderful floodplain landscape along the Aare, a bird paradise and home to irises and beavers. Past reservoirs to Switzerland's moated castle, where the Reuss, Limmat and Aare rivers converge and flow into the Rhine as the Aare near Koblenz. Continue to Bad Zurzach and individual departure.

Tour character

A perfectly signposted, mostly flat cycle route, predominantly on field and forest trails far away from motorized traffic. Some parts left natural, but most of the tour is done on asphalt roads. On the first stage there are some passages where you have to push your bike and there are some steep parts as well.
