Charming Rhine Valley and rugged mountain passes

The eastern parts of Switzerland are definitely worth a visit. Liechtenstein, the monarchy in the heart of Switzerland with its beautiful castle marks the beginning of Via Alpina in Switzerland. The hike takes of smoothly with astroll through the vineyards around Sargans, but soon the rolling hills change for rugged peaks.

The first mountainpasses have to be conquered and then Via Alpina takes you to the scarcely populated region of Glarus. A challenging walk past the mountain Hausstock brings you to the small village of Linthal, where the first part of Via Alpina comes to an end.

From Vaduz, capital of Liechtenstein. The River Rhine and border is crossed at Sevelen. The trail then leads along the foot of the Gonzen through woodlands and meadows, with views over the Rhine Valley

Milk from neighbouring alps is piped to Alp Siez. On Alpine pastures are followed by a narrow ridge of black slate. The terraced alp huts on the other side of the Foopass are an architectural rarity.

Elm lies in the GeoPark where the Glarner main thrust fault clearly reveals the creation of the Alps. Surrounded by rock bastions, the silted-up Wichlensee lake, resembles an amphitheatre. After the steep Richetlipass, the lonely Durnachtal awaits

Smooth start, challenging end. Via Alpina gives you a chance to get used to hiking. You walk on smooth paths in the first days, but this changes on the second part of the hike. Especially for the legs between Weisstannen and Elm good physical condition, stamina and surefootedness is needed.
