Premium Hiking Tours in Valais

The Goms High Trail is the only route in Switzerland to have been designated a “Premium Hiking Trail” by the German Hiking Institute. This award is well deserved – this high-altitude trail truly is in a league of its own! Panoramic paths lead you past sun-drenched Valais villages and dreamy alpine pastures on your way to Oberwald. After this rather leisurely hike, an adventure of rock and ice awaits you on the Furka High Trail, taking you past the Rhône Glacier and into the mountain world of the Gotthard massif. After an action-packed day’s hike, you cross the Urseren Valley and reach the mountain village of Andermatt.

Itinerary

Luggage drop-off in Brig and per train and cable car to Bellwald. The mountain village of Bellwald is the starting point for your Goms High Trail hiking tour, which takes you along the sunny side of the Goms high valley. Today’s stage features constant ups and downs and finishes with a descent to the lovely village of Reckingen.

Countless little mountain streams nearby feed the Rhône, known by the locals as “Rotten” in their dialect. Be prepared for a climb or two today as you encounter the ravines these streams have carved into the rock over the course of the centuries. Wonderful views of the historic mountain villages down in the valley, with their beautiful Valais houses, await you.

The Furka High Trail first takes you up to Gletsch, the road snaking its way up countless hairpin bends to the Grimsel Pass. You’ll then continue over the Furka Pass and hike to the village of Tiefenbach, possibly with a visit to the nearby Rhône Glacier along the way. This stage is a little harder than the rest, so you can shorten it by using public transport if you wish.

Today begins with a leisurely hike along the rocky south-east slopes of the Furka High Trail, above the Urseren Valley, with views down to Realp and Hospental, the pass road and the historic Furka steam railway. Along the way, the beauty of the local lakes, alpine flora, mountain streams and wild rocky peaks unfold before you. Your arrival in in Andermatt concludes this hiking tour.

Tour character

The constant ups and downs on the Goms High Trail and the tough ascent to the Furka Pass require a good level of basic fitness. The paths are well maintained and easy to walk on, but a sure foot is still necessary.
