The southern part of the Black Forest is a diverse area. Various rivers have its source in this area and have formed countless gorges. The landscape is idyllic and romantic as well as rough and adventurous. First, you pass through Gorge Wutach. The first kilometres are rough and intense, later on nature becomes more idyllic and welcoming.
You make your way out of the Canyon and climb small ridge where you have wonderful views on the close Lake Schluchsee. Your hike then continues to Wehra Valley. Every leg brings you to new gorges and canyons and these make your hiking week in the Black Forest both challenging and diverse.
The castle Hohenlupfen forms the panorama of the small village Stühlingen where you start your hike. You walk along the Wutach and soon you reach the gorge. Rugged rocks and a pristine forest make the landscape in the eastern part of the Wutach gorge very wild and dramatic. The Schluchtensteig-trail takes you to Blumberg where you stay for the night.
Small trails lead your way through the Gorge. The sound of water is always audible but sometimes the Wutach seeps away in the ground. Todays walk is very pristine and relaxing but a lot of ups and downs make todays hike a challenging leg. You spend your night at a traditional country inn in the heart of the gorge.
After walking through deep gorges todays walk leads to promising heights. You pass the ruins of "Räuberschlössle". In former days this place was used as a hiding place by thugs and outlaws. From here you continue to Haslach gorg where you leave the canyon on a steep trail. You walk past Lenzkirch and soon you reach the small village Oberfischbach.
Small hills and forests form todays landscape. Shortly after your start you have the chance to admire the sparkling waters of Lake Schluchsee. Now it's uphill all the way until you reach the highest point of your hike. From "Krummenkreuz" you walk down to Bannwald gorge. Over rocky trails and small bridges you make your way to St. Blasien.
A steep uphill is going to be the first test today. While you catch your breath you can have a look at the minster of St. Blasien down in the valley. The Dachsberg is the highest point today.
From here it's all the way down to a forest named Hotzenwald. On your way to Wehra gorge you pass romantic meadows, heather and beautiful farm houses. As soon as you've walked through the gorge it's only a stone's throw to Todtmoos.
Wehra gorge is the last canyon and a true highlight. Sparkling waters at your feet and twittering birds above your head. Enjoy natures wonders on your last walking day. After a couple of kilometres the inn Mettlerhütte comes into sight. From here you may even spot the peaks of the Alps close-by. You finish your walk in the gardens of castle Wehr and can rest your feet in another cosy inn.
