Cycling: Rhine-Route for families
Anyone who says farmers are conservative and unimaginative has never been to Lake Constance. Countless farms here provide a breath of fresh air with ideas and a lot of passion. This bike tour takes you from one farm to the next.
Arrival to Thal
A picturesque Riegelhof is the starting point of your tour around Lake Constance. Hike through the nearby vineyard or help to milk a cow.
From the farm you start in the direction of Rheinholz. Shortly afterwards you will reach Altenrhein and the shore of Lake Constance. The small towns of Rorschach and Arbon have lively beach promenades where you can take a break to enjoy an ice-cream. Shortly after Arbon you will reach the next farm in Frasnacht.
You pass by small villages and settlements like pearls on a string on the shores of Lake Constance. At the end, Lake Constance flows into the Rhine again and after Kreuzlingen you follow the river to Ermatingen. It is steeply uphill again to Zelglihof, but at the end of the day you can look back with satisfaction on the kilometres you have covered.
Ermatingen – Hemishofen
A brisk descent brings you back to the Rhine. You will see the island of Reichenau on the other side of the river and shortly after that you will pass Steckborn with its great bathing beach and small boat harbour. Later you change to the other side of the river at Stein am Rhein and continue to Bolderhof. There is a lot to see and discover here for all ages.
Hemishofen – Flaach
The Rhine Falls are the largest waterfall in Europe and one of the highlights of your tour. If you are brave enough, take a break here and watch the roaring water from the nearby rope park from a height. An idyllic stretch of the Rhine will then take you past Rheinau to Wydhof, which lies just outside the small village of Flaach.
Flaach – Bad Zurzach
Today, the route goes up and down a little at the beginning before you reach the mouth of the Töss, which flows into the Rhine here. The small village of Eglisau is ideally located for a short break before you tackle the final spurt to the thermal baths of Bad Zurzach. A plunge into the warm water concludes this journey along the Rhine.

Almost completely flat and largely free of traffic, the Lake Constance Cycle Route and the Rhine Route are ideal for families. Occasionally there are short climbs. However, these do not pose any major problems for children aged 8 and over.

Note:

Arrival/Departure:
- Arrival by bus and train via St. Gallen to Thal. A few minutes walk to the first farm.
- Return journey by bus and train via Bülach, Winterthur and Rorschach to Thal. Duration: approx. 2.5 – 3 hours or direct departure from Bad Zurzach.
Leave the car at home! For every bike, biking or hiking tour in Switzerland, you will receive an SBB coupon per participant, which you can use to deduct CHF 10 from the ticket price for traveling by train. The reduction can be obtained in the SBB online store or in the SBB app. On many trips, we use the luggage counters at the stations at the beginning and at the end to hand over the suitcases. You can conveniently combine this right away when you arrive by train. If you are a GA owner, you can provide this information when booking. We will credit you the amount on the invoice. If you don't need the coupon for the trip itself, you can use it during the year. Unfortunately, a retroactive refund is not possible for administrative reasons.
