Cycling holidays in and around Zurich, Lake Zug & Sihlwald

Velo: Rund um Zürich

In town, in the countryside, on the river

The city of Zurich is well-known throughout the world. Anyone looking for a sophisticated lifestyle, a variety of restaurants and bars and a lively cultural scene definitely won’t be disappointed. At the same time, Zurich is quite a compact city surrounded by nature reserves, lakes and authentic Swiss villages. You’ll never cease to be amazed at how quickly the sounds of urban hustle and bustle alternate with the clunking of cowbells. This cycling tour in and around Zurich is an experience no keen leisure cyclist should miss.

Itinerary

You leave the city and head north, passing through the relatively urban districts of Seebach and Affoltern. The route becomes more rural once you pass the Katzensee lake. Follow the route along the Furtbach brook, which is almost completely flat, to Würenlos – shortly afterwards you’ll reach the cosmopolitan little town of Baden. Return to Zurich by cycling along the river Limmat.

Well signposted cycle paths lead you out of the city to Schlieren and Urdorf, and today’s stage has you take one through the idyllic Reppischtal valley. A refreshing dip in Lake Türlersee and cycling through the picturesque little villages along the Albis will surely make you forget just how close to the big city of Zurich you actually are. After passing through Steinhausen, you reach Zug – a town known for its low taxation and as the headquarters of a multitude of multinational companies. This seems less important, though, once you see the enchanting old town and the beautiful lakeside promenade. Nowhere else in Switzerland will you find a more beautiful sunset than on Lake Zug.

Today’s stage takes you through the Sihlwald – a forest nature reserve of Swiss national significance – located just outside Zurich. Ancient, wild beech forests and a lively array of local flora and fauna await you here. You then cycle along the Sihl via Adliswil and back to the city. When you arrive in Zurich, it’s time to collect your luggage and depart.

Tour character

The area surrounding Zurich is hilly. You can expect to have to negotiate both major and minor inclines every day. The routes are excellently signposted and easy to ride. Occasionally, however, you’ll encounter some sections on unpaved tracks.
