Valais in all its glory

The Lower Valais mountain world is packed with contrasts. A rugged and rocky desert-like landscape awaits you on the Great St Bernard, where the historic hospice stands tall, watching somewhat defiantly over the pass. Two Alpine passes and a ridge hike further on, you descend to the idyllic Val Ferret forests and then press on to the picturesque mountain lake at Champex. Stunning vistas of the Trient Glacier round off this hiking tour. This is Valais in all its glory – magnificent mountain backdrops and hospitable and friendly villages, with idyllic views every step of the way.

Itinerary

Arrival in Bourg St. Pierre

The historic pass initially takes you along the reservoir, with a view of the pass road, to the fascinating hospice and travellers’ hostel on the Great St Bernard Pass, famous for the eponymous dogs once used in rescue operations in the surrounding mountains. The climate along the pass can be harsh, so you’re advised to come equipped for the conditions.

Once you leave the hospice, the hike takes you over two passes with absolutely breathtaking views of the mountains. After the steep descents, the three Lacs de Fenêtre, the next destination on this trail, come into view, glimmering in deepest blue. The Hérens cattle grazing all around you round off this uniquely beautiful experience.

Today’s hike is a gentleone that takes you across meadows, through forests and into stunning little villages. The final ascent towards picturesque Champex surrounded by woodland and with its marvellous lake – you’d be forgiven for describing it as little Canada – offers simply magnificent views of the route through the valley.

Today’s stage isn’t too long and forms part of the Tour du Mont Blanc. After visiting the romantic, uninhabited Durnand valley, a steep ascent to Alp Bovine and magnificent views of the Rhône valley follow. Once you arrive in Trient, you’ll take the bus to Martigny, collect your luggage and depart.

Tour character

The ridge hike to La Fouly, over the Col des Chevaux and Col du Bastillon passes, is particularly difficult, as you’ll be hiking in alpine terrain at high altitudes. Sure-footedness and a good level of fitness are essential for these rocky sections of the Alpine Pass Trail.
