Cycling: Rhone-Route Switzerland Trips to Geneva

Sun, Wine and Culture

The Rhone-Route connects  - between Oberwald and Geneva – three completely different types of landscapes: In the Goms, the landscape is alpine and the route consists for the most part of downhill rides with an occasional rise. In Brig, the Rhone valley widens. Nowhere in Switzerland, is there more sunshine than here in the Wallis.

Another change of senery in Villeneuve. The wide, light flooded area of the Lake of Geneva on one side, the wine hills with sounding names on the other side of the route accompany the cyclist on his way towards the goal of Geneva. The Rhone-Route offers scenic and cultural variety and the flat route profile makes it perfect for casual cyclists aswell.

Itinerary

The main valley of the Valais widens, the sun heats the dry mountain flanks. Between Leuk and Sierre, an unruly stretch of the Rhone, and the Pfynwald, a nature reserve on a huge cone of rubble. The capital Sion shows off its historic castles, churches and mansions.

In the lower Rhone Valley, the Dents-du-Midi dominates the high-Alpine backdrop. It is the world of productive orchards and vineyards.

approx. 30 km
100 m
120 m

High above, a round tower guards Martigny on the Rhone bend, St-Maurice at the narrowest point in the valley guards golden church treasures. High mountains and lowlands, still hidden behind reeds, the expanse of Lac Léman, and then defiantly the fortress of Chillon Castle in the water.

approx. 50 km
180 m
270 m

Lac Léman, a small silvery sea surrounded by snowy peaks and the vineyards of Lavaux, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Along the shore: Vevey, Montreux, and the metropolis of Lausanne, "Olympic city" and lifeblood of the Vaudois population.

The terraced vines between Morges and Nyon are known as "La Côte". Fruity Chasselas is pressed here and sweetens your ride. Down on the lakeshore, the market towns of Morges and Rolle pass by. Almost kitschy: the castles of Nyon and Prangins.

approx. 45 km
475 m
445 m

The free lakeshore becomes rarer, the villas and yachts larger, soon the cosmopolitan city of Geneva announces itself with boulevards and the 140-metre-high water fountain "Jet d'eau". After arrival in Geneva, individual departure.

Tour character

An easy tour with only a few metres of altitude. The tour through Lavaux looses its teeth, if you use the funicular to ride up Mont-Pèlerin. There may be a little more traffic around the towns.
