The essentials at a glance

This moderate gravel bike loop tour explores Bern and Gantrisch Nature Park over 3 cycling days. Starting from Bern's old town, the route leads through Gürbetal to Thun with views of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Day two climbs Gurnigel Pass on quiet gravel roads (1,220m ascent) before descending to Schwarzsee mountain lake. The final stage winds through forests and meadows via Schwarzenburg back to Bern. Daily distances range from 44-57.5 km on secondary roads, gravel and forest tracks.

From the city to the countryside

Starting in Bern, this wonderfully varied gravel loop takes you through the peaceful Gürbetal valley to Thun, up to the panoramic Gurnigel Pass and onward to the picture‑perfect Schwarzsee lake. You find yourself alternating between enjoyable gravel paths, quiet forest roads and idyllic farming landscapes, always accompanied by striking views of the Bernese Alps.

Nestled in the Alpine foothills, Schwarzsee is one of the tour’s scenic highlights. Passing through the Gantrisch Nature Park, the route winds over panoramic ridges and through wide forest expanses before returning to Bern. The mix of diverse gravel terrain, magnificent views and immersion in nature makes this tour a truly memorable experience.

Itinerary

This opening stage takes you through the heart of Bern’s old town, across Belpmoos into the peaceful Gürbetal and onwards to Thun. The route follows secondary roads and partly gravel and forest tracks. Sweeping views of the Gantrisch range and the iconic trio of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau guide you towards the beautiful blue waters of Lake Thun.

Leaving Thun, you climb towards the Gurnigel Pass on a peaceful gravel road with very little traffic. After the impressive ascent through unspoilt nature, your efforts are rewarded with sweeping views and pleasingly varied gravel terrain. A swift descent on quiet roads carries you down into the valley, where the route turns towards Schwarzsee at Zollhaus. This perfectly situated mountain lake provides the crowning glory of a memorable day’s ride.

The final stage winds through forests and meadows in a pleasant rhythm of ups and downs. Along the way, you pass beautiful Bernese farmhouses and the charming village of Schwarzenburg. From Bütschelegg, enjoy a last, sweeping vista of the landscapes and villages you’ve ridden through. Then it’s an easy, relaxing ride back towards Bern. To round things off, the River Aare offers a refreshing dip before you reach the capital.

Tour character

Good basic fitness is required for this tour, but technically the route is very manageable – even for newcomers to gravel biking. Short, steeper sections can easily be pushed if needed. As the route only partly follows SwitzerlandMobility trails, waymarking is not continuous; navigation is via app. If you are taking your own gravel bike, we recommend tyres at least 40 mm wide with a grippy tread: denser knobs in the centre and coarser knobs on the sides. Semi‑slick tyres are less suitable due to the gravel sections.
