Forgotten Passes

One of Europe’s most important trade routes used to run over the Lukmanier Pass. Until the Gotthard Pass tunnels were built, the old pass road was also an important link. Nowadays, the passes mainly attract day-trippers and sporty types. This tour also takes you over the Passo del Sole and the Oberalp Pass. Exploring beautiful valleys is also on the agenda and a stunning descent awaits you in Val Bedretto. The sparkling lakes in Val Piora are sure to enchant you, and the descent into Valle di Blenio takes you through a range of different climates. These passes may not be as well known today, but they are still as spectacular as ever!

Itinerary

After you’ve dropped your luggage off in Andermatt, you’ll cycle up to the legendary Gotthard Pass, mostly on the old mountain pass route and on bridle paths. From the barren mountain landscape high above the Valle Leventina, the route descends rapidly through lush forests and centuries-old hamlets to the municipality of Airolo.

You begin today’s stage by taking the cable car up to Sasso della Boggia. Then, follow the scenic Airolo Bike route, ideal for those who prefer varied descents that aren’t too challenging, back down into the valley and become immersed in the unique and unforgettable mountain setting along the way. Afterwards, you ride up to Piora and Lago Ritom.

On today’s stage, the charming Piora plain forms a stark contrast to the vibrant, busy valley. The challenging descent from Passo del Sole to Olivone is considered one of the best in Ticino.

From Olivone, you’ll take the bus up to the historic Lukmanier Pass today. This route has been used for centuries and connects the top of the pass with Disentis. The route on the Via Lucmagn through the Val Medel is technically easy, then you ride up to Mumpé Medel and back down to the monastery village

Today starts with a cable car ride up to Caischavedra. A mountain trail connects the mountain station with the Bostg lookout point. This exciting route with plenty of panoramic views snakes its way towards Sedrun, where the train to the Oberalp Pass awaits you. A rapid descent from here leads past the reservoir and beautiful Alpine meadows. From Nätschen, it’s simply a matter of coasting along the pass road. Your arrival in Andermatt concludes this tour – it’s now time to collect your luggage and depart.

Tour character

A challenging ride in the Gotthard region. You can avoid some of the elevation gain in most stages by taking the cable cars or the Swiss PostBuses. Nevertheless, you will need good technique and physical fitness to get the most out of this tour.
