The essentials at a glance

Cycle from Lake Resia to Verona along the Adige River through South Tyrol and Trentino. The route passes the sunken church tower of Graun, medieval Glurns, Merano's Mediterranean vegetation, and Messner's castles. Highlights include cycling through orchards, a boat ride on Lake Garda, and exploring Verona's historic sites. Medium difficulty with mostly downhill sections covering approximately 45-70 km daily over 7 cycling days.

Light-footed pedaling downhill to the South

Take your time exploring the beauty of South Tyrol — there’s no better way than by bike! Your journey begins at Lake Resia, right near the Austrian border. Majestic Alpine views, blooming orchards, and vineyards guide you into the historic towns of Merano and Bolzano. Here, Mediterranean flair meets South Tyrolean charm — soak in the atmosphere over an Aperol Spritz or a cappuccino. Idyllic wine villages like Auer and Lana line your route, along with the cathedral city of Trento. Before you admire the Arena in Verona or visit Juliet’s House, the sparkling waters of Lake Garda await. And just like at Lake Kaltern a few days earlier, a refreshing dip and a scenic boat ride are the perfect way to enjoy a summer day.

Itinerary

Resia is a picturesque alpine destination beside the famous Lake. Enjoy the surroundings with stunning mountain views and cultural treasures. A special highlight is the submerged church tower in the lake, an iconic landmark captivating visitors from all over the world.

You’ll cycle along Lake Resia, taking in views of the sunken church tower in Graun, before reaching the medieval town of Glurns, renowned for its perfectly preserved city walls. Your journey’s first destination is Schlanders, the vibrant heart of the Vinschgau Valley.

Castles and fortresses, including the renowned Juval Castle—former home of mountaineer Reinhold Messner—dot the route or rise high above it. As you cycle, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the majestic Ortler massif and the Stelvio Pass, before gently descending into the tranquil town of Merano, embraced by its lush Mediterranean vegetation.

Two route options lead to Bolzano: one follows the Etsch River, while the more scenic path meanders through orchards via Lana and Eppan. Along the way, you’ll discover the Messner Mountain Museum, housed within the beautifully restored ruins of Sigmundskron Castle. Visiting Ötzi, the Iceman, offers a truly fascinating experience.

Scenic bike paths trace the Etsch River, with stretches meandering through fragrant orchards until you reach Salurn, the point where German-speaking South Tyrol comes to an end. From there, you’ll continue cycling to Trento, famed for its charming historic old town.

First, follow the Etsch River through Rovereto to Mori. From there, the route heads west toward Lake Garda. After a short climb over Passo San Giovanni, you’ll enjoy a downhill ride to the lake at Torbole, continuing on to Riva. A boat awaits you there for a scenic cruise along the full length of the lake.

The final stage takes you through gently rolling vineyards, partly flat, onward to Verona—a city rich in sights. Be sure to visit the Arena, Juliet’s House, and the ancient city walls.

You’ll cycle mostly along beautifully maintained bike paths following the Etsch River, with the rest of the route on asphalted country roads. From the Reschen Pass to Lake Garda, the route descends nearly 1,500 meters (about 4,900 feet), though a few short climbs still await. Over eight days, you’ll have plenty of time to discover the many beautiful places along the way. Busy roads are encountered only on very brief stretches.
