The highlights of Grisons

In the Rhine Gorge, the still young river winds past the imposing limestone walls. As a contrast, the red trains of the Rhaetian Railway pass over bridges and viaducts on adventurous tracks.

The passes are among other things special because of their difference in altitude and in the Swiss National Park, man lets nature run its free course unhindered. The spectacular end of the tour is the ride high above the Tamina Gorge to the Kunkel Pass. Grisons has a lot to offer and you can visit all these highlights on a bike tour along the Alpine Circle.

Itinerary

From the monastery village of Disentis, you follow the young Rhine through the Surselva. There are plenty of dreamy villages along the way. Ilanz is the first town on the Rhine and the gateway to the nearby Rhine Gorge.

The white rocks pile up majestically above the turquoise-blue waters in the Rhine Gorge. The route leads in constant ups and downs high above this natural monument and offers fantastic views of the up to 300-metre-high limestone walls.

Shortly after the confluence of the Vorderrhein and the Hinterrhein, you change the riverside. The ride leads through the meadows of Rhäzüns and past numerous castles along the way to Thusis.

Train ride from Thusis to Tiefencastel. After bypassing the busy Schin Gorge, you follow the Albula to Filisur. Take time for a break and for a detour to the Landwasser Viaduct. The route then continues steadily uphill past the mountain villages of Bergün and Preda to the Albula Pass. Again and again, there are views of the viaducts of the railway line that winds its way up the mountain here. Finally, there is a descent into the Engadine.

The small villages of the Engadine are strung along the banks of the Inn as if on a string of pearls. Just before the valley narrows, you make a short detour into Val Trupchun and visit the Varusch Park Hut. Back in the Inn Valley, you make your way to Zernez, the gateway to the Swiss National Park.

Train ride from Zernez to Klosters. The little river Landquart and the narrow-gauge line to Davos accompany you on today's journey through the Prättigau. Back in the Rhine Valley, you will cross the Bündner Herrschaft and reach the spa town Bad Ragaz with its thermal baths.

High above the Tamina Gorge, the little road winds its way up to the dam wall of Lake Mapragg. You cross the idyllic Tamina Valley and continue up to the Kunkel Pass. As a finish to the ride on the Alpine Circle, a rushing descent down to Tamins awaits you. From here, you continue leisurely along the banks of the Rhine to Chur. After arriving in Chur luggage pick-up and departure.

Tour character

Busy roads are avoided by train, occasionally there are sections on natural roads. Mostly, you cycle downstream, so the road is often slightly downhill. However, steep climbs await you again and again in the Bündnerland. The third day with the ride over the Albula Pass is especially demanding. The trip can be shortened optionally, but without any problems, by taking the Rhaetian Railway. On the descent from the Kunkel Pass on the last day, the route leads on somewhat rough natural roads for about four kilometres.
