The “Chemin des Bisses”

The Black Death caused a switch to more fruitful livestock farming in Valais. To keep the pastures and meadows watered, the construction of the irrigation channels, known locally as “bisses”, began in the mid-13th century, and these still define the landscape of the Rhone Valley to this day.

The local mountain farmers came up with some ingenious constructions, some of which you’ll see up close on this hike. The water gently ripples in the channels next to you, leading you from one mountain village to the next along little-used mountain trails.

Itinerary

Day
1
Arrival in Martigny

Today begins with a bus journey to Col des Planches. From here, you’ll hike across meadows to Col du Lein, there’s a lovely little resting spot with barbecue areas here that’ll entice you to take a quick break. Then, you enter the forest near Boveresse and follow the romantic route along the Bisse de Saxon irrigation channel, which starts out dry but later has water, on to La Tzoumaz.

Today, you’ll come across the beautiful picnic area at Taillay near the Bisse de Saxon, with its water wheel, warning hammer and some lovingly restored sections. As you press on to Nendaz, the silence of the forest contrasts strikingly with magnificent views of the Rhône Valley.

Nendaz is the perfect spot on this tour, as it has the largest network of “bisses” that are still in use. There are eight of them, as a matter of fact! Today’s leisurely hike takes you from Planchouet to Veysonnaz, through colourful flowery meadows and along the open watercourse of the restored Grand Bisse de Vex.

Today takes you along the Bisse de Vex to Mayens de Sion. You’ll encounter the huge concrete church in Hérémence and the fairy-tale world of the Earth Pyramids in Euseigne is surprising and enchanting in equal measure. You then ascend to the village of St. Martin in Val d’Hérens, from where it’s just a short bus ride to Vernamiège.

Today, you return to St. Martin by bus and then embark on a wonderful high-altitude Rhône valley hike, through quaint Valais villages, from the source of the Grand Bisse de Vercorin along the open “bisse” to the Refuge du Bisse.

Today involves a challenging stage through the Réchy valley. In the stage town of Vercorin, a beautiful old town and church await you.

Today, you’ll visit the “Bisse des Sarrasins”, built around 500 years ago. The 17 educational information boards here never fail to enthral visitors interested in both the historical and technical aspects of this site. The route then continues along the “Grand Bisse de St. Jean” to the village of Grimentz, which is the perfect embodiment of the canton of Valais. Your arrival in Grimentz concludes this tour – it’s now time to depart via Sierre.

Tour character

The final stretch of the tour is more demanding in terms of fitness. Although most of the hikes along the “bisses” are flat, there are always ascents and descents to be negotiated. The rock can be slippery in rainy weather. Sure-footedness and, in some places, a head for heights are required.
