From shore to shore

Lake Biel, Lake Murten and Lake Neuchâtel are the main attractions on this cycling tour through the Three Lakes region. Vast vegetable-growing areas, fragrant vineyards, stunning hills shaped by glaciers, river valleys and a fjord-like reservoir set this diverse region between the Jura and the Alps apart from the rest.

Countless bird species nest on the lakes and rivers here and, at the south-eastern tip of Lake Neuchâtel, the Grande Cariçaie, which is Switzerland’s largest contiguous wetland, never fails to enchant visitors with its rich flora and fauna. Indeed, the stiff sedge sour grass species is just as much at home here as kingfishers and beavers are. The picturesque old towns of Murten and Laupen are steeped in history, while Yverdon-les-Bains is known for its spa culture, which was even popular with the Romans. Speaking of bathing … on what other cycling tour will you find so many inviting bodies of water to cool off in as on your journey through the Three Lakes region?

Itinerary

The charming bilingual town of Biel lies on the lake of the same name, nestled among the foothills of the Jura mountains. It’s here, at the gateway to the Three Lakes Region, where your journey through the delightful lake landscape begins. The small medieval town of Murten on the south-eastern shore of Lake Murten has retained its original character with picturesque old town streets, cosy arcades and an almost complete city rampart.

A scenic circular tour between Lake Murten and the Saane Valley awaits you today. Starting and ending in Murten, you’ll cycle via Golaten in the Bern-Fribourg border region, then along the Saane to Laupen in the canton of Bern. The charming old town with its covered arcades and pretty Läubli houses is a delight to explore. The route takes you back to Murten through the gentle, glacier-formed hills of Fribourg, with its fjord-like Lake Schiffenen.

Today takes you from medieval Murten to the spa town of Yverdon-les-Bains. On the way, you’ll pass the castle of Avenches, which was the capital of Roman Helvetia back in the day. Your route then takes you through the Broye plain and runs south along Lake Neuchâtel.

Over 100 species of birds nest in the Grande Cariçaie, the 400 km long marsh and reed belt on the southern shore. Soon, you’ll reach Yverdon-les-Bains, located in the floodplain where the Thielle tributary and Lake Neuchâtel converge.

A beautiful tour along the shores of Lake Neuchâtel from the spa town of Yverdon-les-Bains to charming Neuchâtel awaits you today. On this stage at the foot of the Jura mountains, you’ll be surrounded by fragrant wine-growing areas such as Bonvillars, romantic winegrowing villages, castles and palaces.

Indulge in an ice cream or a delicious fish dish in one of the charming restaurants right by the lake, or maybe take a refreshing dip in one of the lidos or bays.

From the lively town of Neuchâtel, today’s final stage takes you to Lake Biel, before leading you along its northern shore. The enchanting views of Chasseral to the left and across the water to St. Peter’s Island to the right will stay with you forever. Reaching Biel, at the northern end of the lake, marks the end of your tour.

Tour character

The route is very varied. It’s flat along the shores of the lakes and through the vineyards, but there are some climbs to overcome on the round trip to Laupen. You can expect to encounter some road traffic around the towns and on the northern side of Lake Biel. However, most of the route is on quiet side roads and partly on unpaved field and forest paths.
