Hiking in Hungary

In addition to its wide plains such as the Puszta plain, Hungary has a number of mountains that invite you to go hiking. No wonder hiking is so popular among Hungarians. The inland also enchants with its waters. Lake Balaton is the most important steppe lake in Central Europe. It enchants with beautiful beaches, healing springs, thermal baths and a nature reserve with moors and steppes.

Lake Neusiedl also has a national and nature reserve with the Fertő-Hanság, the eastern tip of which is still in Hungary. Dry long summers attract countless storks to its shores, the endless wine-growing areas are blessed by many hours of sunshine.

The Danube delta is popular with cyclists. Cyclists ride through quiet floodplain landscapes with castles and palaces on the Danube cycle path and get to know venerable health resorts and towns with baroque splendour from the Austro-Hungarian monarchy.

Thermal springs and hearty cuisine

One of the most beautiful places on the Danube is the picturesque artists' village of Szentendre with its baroque cityscape. Its magnificent baroque buildings, royal palace, citadel, chain bridge and medieval castle quarter, make the capital Budapest one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. The thermal springs beneath the city are legendary, many of which are used for thermal baths in spas. The fascinating spa architecture also attracts culture fans to the UNESCO world cultural heritage of Budapest.

The Hungarians like it spicy and hearty, many dishes are based on red paprika powder, onions and tomatoes. Goulash and paprika chicken with dumplings are famous, but you should also try Újházy chicken soup and Hungarian salamis. You can also try the typical Tokaj wine or a Hungarian beer and a fine fruit schnapps for digestion.
