The wine must have been something very special, considering the efforts that were necessary to bring the Valtellina wine to the north. The traders crossed countless passes to bring the noble wine to the people of Austria and Switzerland. Perhaps it was not only the prospect of great profit that led the wine merchants to this route, but the beauty of the Grisons as well?
From Pontresina you can look forward to the pretty Engadine villages and the glacier mills of Alp Grüm thereafter. High-altitude trails lead you to the Val Poschiavo past the Alps and pastures to Italy, where you can toast to successful hiking days with a glass of Veltliner in Tirano.
Surrounded by an impressive mountain landscape from Pontresina through the Val Bernina and over the Bernina Pass to Alp Grüm. Insight into the effects of climate change in Pontresina and Morteratsch and views from Alp Grüm into Val Poschiavo.
You pass the idyllic Lagh da Palü and the glacier mills of Cavaglia on the way from Alp Grüm into Val Poschiavo. The "pots of the giants" are an impressive witness to the glaciation of the valley.
Visit to the glacier mills of Cavaglia. Then descend to the green valley of Poschiavo. There is plenty of time in the afternoon to discover the small community with its many organic certified farms.
Climb to San Romerio, the alpine settlement high above Brusio. Like an eagle's nest, the hut lies above the valley and is managed on a self-catering basis by Gino and his team. The sunny terrace invites you to rest comfortably after the exhausting days.
Through mountain forests, across upland pastures and along smugglers’ paths high above the Val Poschiavo from San Romerio via Viano to Italian Roncaiola. Descent through vineyards to Tirano. Appealing Alpine town with an eventful history and southern charm.
