The wine must have been something very special, considering the efforts that were necessary to bring the Valtellina wine to the north. The traders crossed countless passes to bring the noble wine to the people of Austria and Switzerland.
Perhaps it was not only the prospect of great profit that led the wine merchants to this route, but the beauty of the Grisons as well? The Via Valtellina North takes you from the border with Austria to the idyllic mountain valleys of Dischma and Susauna. You can look forward to the pretty Engadine villages and to Pontresina.
Start your hike with a tour to the small Walser settlement Schlappin. This is followed immediately by a steep climb up to the Walliberg and on a high-altitude trail to Madrisa. You will eventually float back to Klosters with the cable car.
You leave the idyllic Klosters and hike up to the Wolfgang Pass. A leisurely tour along the shores of Lake Davos completes today's short hiking day. Take some time to visit Davos. The highest city in the Alps has a lot to offer.
The murmur of the Dischma stream accompanies you on today's trading route. Only a few Walser houses and stables lie along the way. The small hamlet of Dürrboden used to be a welcome resting place for traders before the arduous walk over the mountains.
You face the highest point of the Via Valtellina at the Scalettapass today. A high pass also includes a steep descent. It leads you into the quiet Val Susauna: welcome to the Engadin! From Chapella, you have the option to take the bus to your accommodation in Zuoz.
The quiet valleys are followed by the lively villages of the Engadine. Patrician houses with painted facades and hotel buildings from the Belle Epoque line the way here. The tour takes you past La Punt and Samedan to Pontresina.
