Cycling: Old bernese path

Through the Bernese domination

Over the centuries, the lords of the city of Bern gained power steadily and were able to extend their influence over large parts of the present-day midlands. The cities with Bernese domination suffered countless conflicts, but were fortunate to survive them largely unscathed. Today, some of the most beautiful cities in Switzerland can be found along the Alter Bernerweg or Old Bernese Path.

The towers of Payerne are visible to cyclists from afar, the mayor Niklaus Thut still watches over the old town in Zofingen and the castles of Lenzburg and Aarburg bear witness to the prosperity of the old empire. The Old Bernerweg is worth travelling, and not just for those interested in history. Idyllic natural spots such as the Kleinbösiger Auried, the Laupen Forest or the bird islands of the Aare enchant travellers on bikes anew every day.

Through flat land and geometrically divided farming landscape, following the high-tech railway line. Close by, the idyllic Burgäschisee lake. Past the bird islands in the Aare, into Canton Aargau to Oftringen, the hub of the Swiss motor trade.

Away from the Aare, through a mixture of cultivated land and garages, shopping centre and houses, the motorway as an escort. Lenzburg still crouches in the shadows of the Habsburg Castle, once powerful across Europe. The goal is Baden, spa town on the Limmat.

Tour character

The hilly Alpine foothills have occasional climbs, but this is still an easy tour. Largely free of traffic, some traffic cannot however be avoided around the urban centres. Daily short sections on natural roads.

Old Bernese Path through Switzerland
We loved the variety of places we saw, riding through the countryside and visiting historic towns. Flyer E-bikes are amazing. SwissMobility app is great for route finding. Route signs at intersections are really good. Some bike paths were on busy roads and this was uncomfortable. Hotels locations were not clear on maps and specific directions were not provided to hotels. When the bike paths were separated from roads the riding was superb. Eurotrek Route descriptions should explain more clearly that designated bike routes are sometimes on busy roads or highways.
Eurotrek AG answered:
Thank for booking your trip with Eurotrek and your feedback regarding the documents. We will kindly go through them and adjust it where necessary. Best regards
